K Zildjian 20" Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride x2
I have two 20” K Zildjian Pre-Age Dry Light Rides, from different years, and (surprise!) they sound different.
The 20” K Zildjian Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride has long been my favorite cymbal. I bought my first one new around 1993 and used it quite a bit for jazz and rock gigs, especially gigs that were in lower-volume environments. It has a little bit of stick definition, a beautiful wash, dark-ish crash, and clangy bell.
For years, I had a piece of tape on the underside, which made it a little more defined and a little less washy.
A few years ago, I saw a tiny crack it in, so I had a chunk removed. Still sounds great, though I was a bit sad that the only cymbal I’ve ever cracked happened to be my favorite.
Zildjian stopped making these years ago, but I’ve also been interested to see when others go for sale used. A few weeks ago, I saw a particularly clean one, and I grabbed it.
The newer one (made in 1998, according to the serial number) definitely sounds different than the first one.
The newer one is heavier-it’s 2177g, compared to 2086g for the one from 1993. In part because it’s heavier, the newer one has more definition and a higher pitch. It almost sounds like it sits somewhere between my original Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride and my 1990s K Zildjian Ride. …And that’s a sound I’ve been looking for!
What do you think?
Equipment used:

-Earthworks SR25 overhead mics
-Blue Hummingbird snare mic

Comparing 3 Zildjian dry ride cymbals - Uptown Ride, K Custom Dry Ride, FX Raw Crash
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 місяці тому
Let's compare a few "dry" Zildjian rides. I bought the Zildjian FX Raw Crash a few years ago, and I love it. I know some people think it's overpriced for a cymbal that's not fully formed. But I think it looks and sounds awesome. I mainly use it for a ride that I can crash. And I only use it once in a while. Recently I decided to try out a few other dry rides-rides that have a ton of definition ...

Hi hat shoot-out: 14" A Zildjian New Beats vs. 14" K Zildjian hi hats

How does a pair of 45-year-old A Zildjian New Beat hi hats compare with a much newer pair of K Zildjian hi hats? I’ve had the same 14” A Zildjian New Beat hi hats since about 1980 or 1981. I’ve used them to play everything from rock, pop, and folk to jazz and even musical theater. To me, these hi hats are what hi hats sound like. Turn your toms into concert toms (Or maybe don't)

The TLDR: I tried to temporarily convert my double-headed toms into concert toms. But it didn't sound good to my ears. Using different heads and tuning even higher probably would have improved the results. The longer story... Back in the '70s and early '80s, I wanted a drum set with concert toms. DW Soundworks plug-in: Quick audio review using Alternate Mode HybriKIT

The good news is that you can buy the plug-in without buying a whole kit, which are incredibly expe...

What is this mystery K Zildjian cymbal?
Переглядів 433Рік тому
I bought this 20" K Zildjian ride cymbal from someone on Reverb last week in part because I was intrigued. It doesn't have the stamp that tells you what model it is. (Maybe it was polished off.) From the pictures, I thought maybe it was a Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride, because the hammering looked a bit like my Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride. But now that I have it home, I'm not sure. Electronic drumming with drumKAT, DW pancake gong drum, and djembe

I have a 20-inch DW pancake gong drum, which I really enjoy. I was wishing I had several of them, so I could tune to different pitches. But of course, where would I put them all? Hybrid drumming: electronic drums + acoustic cymbals

Back in the '80s, when electronic drums were all the rage, drummers often played hybrid kits: Some had acoustic kicks, others had acoustic snares, and most had acoustic cymbals. 20" K Zildjian Ride Comparison: Constantinople Medium Thin High vs. Medium Thin Low

I bought a 20" Zildjian Constantinople Medium Thin Low ride late last year, and I like it a lot. It's dark, has a nice wash, and can sound downright trashy. New beats have a tighter lathing which lends itself to touch more glassiness. The wider band lathed K offers a meatier stick but at a drier clip and at the expense of some tone IMHO. New Beats all day

I use RIMS mounts. That way I can position them like regular toms. To me, the straight Rototom rack is too limiting. The downside of using RIMS is that you lose the ability to tune them just by turning them. But if you add a nut to the bolt down near the bottom, you can still tune them by reaching under and turning the clamp/lever thing.
